Hi,
Having trouble getting my front axle nut off, the one that holds the plate with the levers on. If I secure the plate the axle spins within it and if I secure the nut on the other side then that nut comes undone and I have no way to hold the axle and unfasten the nut. Getting a bit frustrated with it so thanks in advance for any suggestions. I tried putting another nut as a lock nut on the speedo gears side but the axle was still spinning and chewing up the new nut.

If the pinch bolts are done up there should be no problem undoing the nut.

I hold the axle in a vice (soft jaws). My vice is sufficiently far away from the wall to do this (just)
A good big pair of vice grips would do at a pinch.

If you don't mind replacing the nut (they don't cost much), I got my nut off by using a centre punch and hammer.

The following passage is in Technical Notes/ Front Brake Overhaul

"Remove the brake plate assembly by first undoing the centre retaining nut.
Apply pressure to the brake lever to prevent the spindle from turning. You may need to gently
hold the spindle in the vice if this is not enough. These nuts can be very tight and it may require
gentle tapping with a hammer and punch on the hexagon. (A replacement nut is relatively cheap).

There is a tool called a stud extractor, they come in various shapes and sizes, also used in plumbing when called a pipe wrench (this type example https://www.amazon.co.uk/Power-01155-He ... rip+wrench), used to unscrew studs from blocks etc. A large one would grip an axle but might need padding (cloth tape grips) like a vise. I favour the bench vise. Impact driver? Lots of Plusgas? Heat? Can a lock nut be got on the far side?

Hi, If you dont have a vice use the forks . just put the axle in the fork clamp from the outside not between the legs then remove the nut. a useful dodge for roadside repairs!

Excellent sideways thinking Vince (literally)

Vince's idea is novel but there may be a temptation to over tighten the clamp in an effort to stop turning, also any twisting force may just crack the alloy...

Think the vice is the best method plus a large well made tube spanner which can have its tommy bar tapped with a hammer..

Trying to remember is it the same size as the nut on the final drive gearbox sprocket??

Different sizes, speedo bit is smaller. Having a break from it for today, either need to buy a vice or a spanner so I can get at it when axle is clamped fully in the forks. I've been doing it with a socket and breaker bar so far. I like Vince's idea and would defo have tried that without Gwilly's warning, anyone else got an opinion whether I should try it that way? Cheers
