Has anyone out there fitted a Pazon electronic ignition kit to their 500 Classic engine? I am not sure whether the ignition is set up with the engine at 0.8mm BTDC, or whether to set the kit up with the engine at 32 degrees BTDC, ie fully advanced position. The instructions that came with my system is not specific on this point.

Any pointers/advice will be appreciated.

Cheers

The surefire on Nortons and Triumphs are set at full advance..

Would imagine same for a single.. 30-32 degrees..

I suspected that might be the case. I will set it up at 32 BTDC and see if that does the trick. That is how our hosts recommend setting up the Boyer set up, but I have been in contact with them and they have not used the Pazon, so could not give me any definite advice. I've had no response yet from Pazon in New Zealand, but hope they will eventually get back to me soon. Thanks for your response.

I fitted one back in Feb 2009 and set the ignition at full advance by using a strobe light and a timing disc fixed on the alternator rotor.

If you have one specifically for the Enfield it may have a different amount of advance from the one I fitted which was for a Triumph twin. Pazon didn't do ignition systems for the Enfield back then;)
I found it didn't tick over very well with 32* of full advance because the ignition timing at tick-over was too retarded. 34* cured this problem and the bike ran very well using that setting. A dial gauge or positive stop was necessary to find TDC to set it up accurately though!

Thanks for the info and photos, ric, I will be devoting a day to re-timing and generally recommissioning my Bullet 65 on Wednesday, and will set up on the 34 degrees BTDC that you found successful. Did you find your machine's running was improved with the electronics? A fellow enthusiast is a dyed-in-the -wool traditional biker, and recommends that I stick with the points. My intentions are to end up with a totally reliable machine that I can tour anywhere with and have total confidence in it's workings!!

I do remember the tick-over was a lot less erratic after fitting the Pazon and the electronic advance curve certainly suited the engine better than the original bob weight design - even with the stronger springs.

I converted my 2003 bullet 500 two years ago and fitted a Boyer electronic ignition. Not had a problem with it since. Bike runs great. I won't be going back.

I texted Pazon in New Zealand, they have replies to say that I should start by setting the engine at 32 BTDC, then set up the red dot on the rotor in the middle of the viewing hole in the circuit board, so I will do this and make any slight tweaks as and if necessary.

Used a Pazon SureFire on my 500 AVL hybrid (based on a classic Bullet bottom end), timed at about 35° and it ran very nicely. It was only replaced because I went for a BT-H electronic magneto.

Hi, I'm toying with fitting electronic ignition, I'm running a 500 Indian Bullet (1990) with PVL coil, Boyer power box and ono battery. Does anyone know if I can run electronic ignition with this set up?
