I thought I'd pass this on, as it may be of use to someone.

Getting grease into the gearbox is not the easiest of tasks. It's not like you can just pour it in. Using a conventional greasegun would take ages to fill the gearbox. I had a bit of a brainwave and bought a cheap cake icing syringe. It works perfect!

Hey Barry. My own brain wave was to warm up the grease in an old pan, and then use a funnel to get the moulten goo into the box. Unfortunately the funnel was made of plastic which slowly began to melt and disappear into the box along with the grease. By the time I realised what was happening half the funnel was in the box and half the grease was on the floor. I really couldn't be ars..d to strip the gearbox down again, and so just left it and hoped for the best. Ever since the box has worked fine with a really nice clean change - so I can fully recommend a mixture of 'OO' grade grease and moulten funnel (mine was yellow but I guess any colour will do)!!!

so RIGGERS, now you have PTFE-lined cables AND gear-teeth as well !!.............. Nice one !!

I usually make a mixture of oil and grease; say 1:2.
It pours fairly easily.

Assuming it had been stripped was the reason for regreasing the box? If so why did you not stuff with grease on reassembly?

That's easy. Gearbox grease has the consistancy of sludge. If you're only changing (in my case) the pawl plate, the gearbox remains in the frame. As soon as you put a handfull of grease in. It'll ooze back out. Therefore your only option is to use the filler hole.
