Hello Folks...AVL 350 (Think Electra X) While in Daily Commute use I Noticed today that when applying the Brakes the Ammeter Swings straight to center,,,So I checked My Lights (Engine Running) all Lights Ok ..Brakes on!= Occasional Brake Light ON/...Lights Off or Side Lights = Brake Lights wprk all the while///But once again Engine Running 10 past Twelve...Brake Light On 12:00 O clock..NEVER A Minus Though? even under full Load......Now it is an Old Battery so my Thoughts are (A) Battery Needs Replacing? (B) Bad Earth??? ... Any Thoughts before I rip her apart at the W/E...Oh in all other respects she is Running Fine ...Thank's

The click you hear might be a spark jumping across a gap in the wiring or switch contactor somewhere.

Craig, sorry but I really am having a problem understanding what is happening. No punctuation and All Leading Caps, it's all one gush. Are you posting from a mobile phone?

As always with electrics, check connectors, relays and fuses, bulbs too - before getting the spanners and wallet out.

Craig,

is your 350 AVL kick start only or is it an electric start model? Both types were made, but with different alternators and charging systems.

If yours is K/S only it will have a CDI alternator, and the electrical system is in three quite separate parts, each fed by its own completely isolated part of the alternator.

One of the 6 coils or windings on the alternator stator is for the CDI ignition only.

Three of the coils I understand feed the AC only headlamp (via a separate voltage regulator) and nothing else apart from the main beam warning light.

That, if my understanding is correct, leaves only two coils out of six to charge the battery for the rest of the electrical system, namely stop/tail light, indicators, horn and most of the instrument lights.

To reduce the demand on the charging circuit I would replace all your indicators and bulbs (except for the headlamp and main beam warning light) with LED versions. The headlamp and ignition are not connected to the charging circuit and will have no effect on the rest of the electrics.

If you have the E/S version it will have a similar alternator to the 3 phase type used on the Electra-X, which will have a higher output, with everything going through the regulator/rectifier unit.

A.

A Follow up and a Lesson to check the simple thing;s//Checked Wires,Lubed Switches, made a sacrifice to the Gods,,,,CHECKED REAR Double Filament Bulb..!!
.(A) The Second Filament had some how Broken as One and Latched on to the First,,So it glowed Right for Lights on, Or as Brake Light with Head Light off,, But With Both on it just Shorted and Amp Meter CLICKED !
NEW BULB Fitted all ok ,all back to normal ,,,
So some time;s its just the simple things that through up mad symptoms.... Cheers All..Craig
