Hello all-----------sort of a "Technical" problem but totally outside my remit-------What's the best weedkiller to use on my block-built driveway and patio. This year the damm things have gone haywire with this extra rain and warmth. Normally I just pick out the odd one or two but they look more like TRIFFIDS now. Not long before they start to walk I imagine !!! HELP

Hi Alan. There is a weed killer called "Pathclear". It is very similar to "Weedol" and is made by the same company. It has the same quick action "burn off" killing property as Weedol which kills short rooted weeds and it also has an extra chemical that prevents germination of any new weed seeds so once clear of weeds then the weeds should not return for quite some time. Unfortunately the deep rooted weeds most common being the dandelion will need a systemic weed killer such as "Roundup" (Glyphosphate) but that will take about at least a fortnight minimum to kill the weeds but is very effective in the long run. Sometimes it is easier and certainly faster to dig out the dandelion roots and all.

A few drops of petrol will start to knock them out by next day. If you are really in a hurry, set fire to the petrol; only joking about the fire.

Alan,
As Les says glyphosphate is the best, bit slow but effective, otherwise just move the bike around and park it over each weed because oil kills them as well but is messy

Im with Les H on this I always use roundup its very good takes a few weeks to work but it totaly clears our block paving at front and Patio & path at back and I find I only need to give it a good spray once a year and it keeps it clear. The one used this year was extra strong 3000 got it from Amazon just do a serch under Garden & Outdoors for Roundup on Amazon.

Hi Paul thanks for that recommendation. I've done some research (what would you expect...LOL) on the strengths of standard Roundup and 3000 version and compared it to Tumbleweed. The strength of the active chemical (Glyphosate) is 120g/L in standard Roundup and the identical strength Tumbleweed. However the superstrength 3000 Roundup is true to its description and is 3x stronger with 360p/L of glyphosate. So by doing the maths and comparisons you will be able to get the best price for any product that contains glyphosate (The actual brand does not matter). I think the Bayer Glyphosate is also 120g/L..........For anybody wanting to buy this type of weedkiller don't get fooled with the ready made up sprays and variations as you will be paying large amounts for just water and not weed killer, so be careful what you buy and stick with th "Concentrate" versions. That's the end for gardening Sunday...time to get my bike out...the sun's shining well.... for a couple of hours...Then Moto GP.

While waiting for my tea to brew strong enough, I always pour any extra boiling water from the kettle onto the weeds, preferably down the cracks in the concrete to get the roots, too. Not done any research on how long they stay dead but wilting takes place very quickly.... and it's free.

I'm with Leon on this one. I once used some old petrol to clear some weeds by a neighbours greenhouse that were spreading like wildfire into my garden and within a few days the weeds and the entire contents of the greenhouse were gone.

Hello guys-----and thank you each, one & all for that v. helpful input. Gardening is just one of those things that I've never really got to grips with over the years. I enjoy the design work and especially taking note of "Classic" gardens and their layout. I'm just no good at the "After-care" so to speak. So, if I've got the jist of this then I will need }---a squadron of Hughies dropping boiling Napalm(Petrol-based) onto my driveway, whilst playing Wagner at top-decibel. Meantime a tanker-load of Round-up is deposited on the lawn just as my garden pool enjoys the 0.5 tonne ( we're metric now you know !) of Chlorine I've given it---oh look, green fish !! Meantime the tea's still not brewed yet !!! Seriously lads---thanks very much. At least I can LOOK like I know what I'm doing out there along with all the other Sunday Garden Warriors. Oh sod it ! I'm off for a ride on the Bullet----trouble is, it'll still be here when I get back, won't it ?? Ah well-------------------
