I have had the sprag clutch removed and now the kickstart appears to slip when trying to start it could this be the kickstart pawl, plus can you put the pawl in with
the gearbox in situ ?
Thanks for any help !!!

Seems a bit of a coincidence if it has only started since the sprag removal. Are you sure it is not the clutch slipping? It would have had to have been removed when the primary cases were taken off. Perhaps needs adjustment or maybe it hasn't been put back correctly.

Do you mean slip? probably clutch slipping.
Or, not engage at all; no resistance? Probably pawl.
There's a tech note on doing the pawl here (left hand panel) and Mr H sells a kit for the job. Just make sure the pawl "parks" in it's slot properly. Sometimes a little filing is required (will be obvious when you have it in bits)
Yes, gearbox in situ.
Just remember the big nut on the mainshaft is LHT.

Good point Frank.
To clarify, the pawl either engages or it doesn't. It can't "slip"

My own experience is that the pawl will start to jump teeth just before total failure.

If the sprag was removed by someone who does not know Enfields, they may have on reassembly of the primary chain case topped it up with a non motorcycle oil, not knowing it's fed from the engine.

RoSy, I think we are talking about pre-unit here so the chain case isn't fed from the engine. Can you clarify Gavin?
