Hi all.. I've had my new Classic 500 since last October.. it was servied at the recommended 500 mile in November (dealers at Grantham) and 'should' be serviced next at 3000 miles. As I'm a pretty competent spanner man, and never had any work done at a garage except a helicoil in my life, I'm wondering is it worth it to spend their fixed £170 fee plus consumables, just to have a stamp in the owners book? I don't plan on selling her in the foreseeable future, so I doubt it will effect its value if I ever do?

Any idea what is involved in the 3000 mile service? I'm guessing oil and filter, as a minimum..

should I change the oil and filter BEFORE 3000 miles? its got 1700 miles on her now.

What is the warranty period? There is usually a stipulation in the warranty that the bike be serviced by a "reccognised garage or dealer" to ensure the warranty is valid. If you are not bothered about the warranty, then do it yourself, sureley you received a service book with your new bike? The service intervals should be in there, along with the requirements for each service.

My EFI Woodsman had an oil and filter at 1000 miles, then 2000, then 3000. That was my preference albeit excessive, and the thing ran beautifully. I would do a change now.

You seem to be quoting service intervals in Kim's not miles; my C5 bought in September last year is supposed to be serviced at 300 miles then 2000 miles. Warranty notwithstanding, I did the 300 miles one myself then another oil and filter change at 750 miles. I'll change the oil and filter again at 1500 miles. Doing it myself allows me to see what is on the magnetic filters and to use the oil brand I choose. My supplying dealer is happy to honour warranty claims as long as nothing I've done could be a factor in whatever the issue is. I've always found that dealers will accept a log of service and repair work backed up by receipts for parts etc - in fact they probably reckon the work is more likely to have been done, at least on a bike that doesn't need sophisticated equipment to service it or specialist skills to service eg Ducati desmo valves. I just prefer to take the risk because at least if I do it myself I know what's been done. I say go for it, but ultimately only you can decide.

pd - As Rattle battle says I think there might be some confusion between miles and km. It should have been serviced at 500km (300 miles) and 3000 km (1850 miles). Also, the first four services are FREE you just pay for oil, filter, windscreen wash, swarfega, protective gloves, coffee and biscuits and a night out for all the lads . . . oh, thats £170!! I think someones working their ticket at Grantham dealers, marra.

the first service was 'free' too, but ended up with £50 ish, for oil and filter and even a replacement bolt that had vibrated loose! the reason I went there was that they had a brand new classic for £4200

If you think the warranty is worth it, then pay for the "stamp", perhaps the savings you make by servicing it yourself would cover any problems that may or maynot occur, these new Enfields don't seem to have troubles

If you look in the owners handbook you will find a service schedule, it is not just oil changes. It may seem a strange thing to say on on here but not every owner is competent to do the jobs.



Sometimes it is useful to have a mechanic go over the required work. The fee is not generally exorbitant, I often have to 'charge' myself more to do the same work; always factor in the time and cost to yourself to diy it.
