My 1958,ish Meteor Minor needs full throttle with choke open and a lot of kicking to start .I tried with the choke on .once warm it is ok Plugs fitted new B7ES = (NC4) Has 1.1/16" Mono Bloc it takes ageses to flood by tickling it .Has a 3.1/2" throttle slide . Ignition distributor set up as the manual then reset whilst running to give the fastest even running .I thought about fitting an 1" carb on it .Bike runs ok no, missing or spitting back .
Look forward to some advise before my ailing leg gives up

A carb should not take ages to flood with the tickler. Either the fuel flow is restricted from the tank or the float level is too low, or perhaps both. Hope you are not a tickler jabber, that repeated action damages the float. Don't like the sound of your timing method either. Strobe or static timing set by the book is best. Carb sounds like the problem anyway. TTFN Jack

Hello Duffel, have you checked that you didn't have air leaks at the manifold ? I'd have a look at the sparkplugs first, to see if they are wet or not. And first of the first, change the plugs and check the spark's colour. Hope it will help you. Claude

Hi Gleggy and WDCO42, Thanks for you both for the reply. I also suspect low fuel level in the carb but thats hard to check ? No I am not a tickler jabber I just hold it down usually with a lolly stick. I have seen many of the old brass floats with dents in .
Hi Claude I am sure that there is no air leaks ,plugs are dry but the central electrode is showing a dirty grey colour but not white

Is the battery ok? Only, if weak then a few kicks would boost the voltage a tad.

Have you got the book? Only the earlier engines like NGK B5HS (only about 28 of them made) and after engine number SMCA 7028 they like B5ES

Mine runs well on Lodge HLN.

If you need manuals or MM info and stuff, I got a page at just scroll down to Kevin's corner, and docs and MM stuff are there.

Hi Scalyback thanks for your suggestions ,the battery is good .I have just come back on it after a long weekend in Holland the bike ran with out missing a beat as you suggested I think it would start easier with a cooler i:e N5 plug (or it it hotter can never remember)but having the airflow fairing the engine does run hotter so I have fitted the next grade up The Kevin's corner is interesting
Thanks
