Can anyone direct me to an exploded diagram of a Lucas points assembly please? I know (because I remember seeing it somewhere,) that there is a drawing which shows the correct order of the small insulating washers which isolate the contact breaker and it's spring from the rest of the points assembly. This is important because if this is not isolated the coil can't correctly discharge when the points open and close. The points assembly on my Series 2 Interceptor seems to have been messed with by a PO and I'd like to reassemble it correctly. I've fixed several problems along the way (wrong terminals on the ignition switch, dud coil etc,) but this is the last thing I need to check. (And yes, I have looked at electronic systems but I'd like to get the standard one to work first!)

I think I've solved it. The wire from the coil to the contact breaker goes UNDER the nylon top hat washer on the pivot post. The wiring was butchered when I got it so I had to make my own sub-loom for the condensor/points section and I used the wrong size eyelets which need to be large enough to go over the nylon sleeve, not the through stud as I had it. I'll make a new sub loom tomorrow and report back.

I've done that a few times, it just shorts the ignition to earth, I think that 9 out of 10 points problems are caused by connecting the wire on top of the top hat insulator.

Sorted, re-made the little cable loom with the right size eyelets to go under the points pivot post nylon washers and bingo, big fat sparks! Now on to the next step in the start up process...
