Hi all I'm in the process of fitting a Lucas sr1 magneto to my 1956 engined 350 bullet .i understand that the auto advance unit should be wedged or wired into the advanced position whilst setting the timing however I'm not sure as to the correct setting with regards to the piston position before top dead centre and was wondering wether the slotted washer remains on the unit or is removed on final tightening any advice would be much appreciated .

According to C.A.E.Booker Royal Enfield Motorcycles book (reprinted 1950) for CO, CM, WD/Co and G models correct ignition advance is 3/8" BTDC at full advance.
Mr Booker notes that the points should be cleaned and set at 0.012 in. before setting timing.

The timing should be 7/16 to 1/2 ins fully advanced, the washer stays put
Hope this helps

Thanks this tallys with what I have believed to be right I now know that from 1960 onwards the bullets were fitted with coil ignition and set an 1/8 inch before TDC,the magneto ignition models prior to 1960 settings are as you have stated thanks .

Hi Vin. A long shot I know. Is your SR1 a new purchase or have you had it a while. I've been trying to find one (ATD primarily) for quite a while. Have you any advice? Good luck with the timing. Cheers. Tom

Hi tom I've had this one a while however I do have another complete with automatic advance retard unit that I am hopping to maybe swap for a k1F with an anti clockwise rotation to suit a bullet

Hi Vin. Would you be willing to part with it so that you can have cash towards your k1F.
You can contact me on 07811888216.
Cheers. Tom
