Hi Guys.
I have been discussing the removal of my SR1 mag on another thread.
Found out from Allan here at Hitchcocks that a previous owner has fitted an Indian pinion taper in my SR1.
I now need an English one with an ATD and the corresponding pinion gear.
MarkM has a gear. I would like to discuss this with you Mark if possible.(07811888216)
If anyone knows the whereabouts of an ATD please let me know. Tony Cooper from Halesowen can refurb if required.
Also, could someone please explain to me why, as a novice bike restorer, I bought a non-runner as my first foray into British classic biking. Doh!!!

Because it was cheaper, and the bike fooled you into thinking that it was 'something you could fix in five minutes with a bean can". Enfields seem to be good at that!

Scalyback is of course exaggerating for comic effect, you will at least need a pair of scissors, a roll of sticky-backed plastic and a screwdriver too.



Much as I am a fan of the SR1 magneto, I would note that points and coil ignition is at least an option until you can locate an auto advance/retard unit to suit.

Tom, I'll give you a call tomorrow (Tuesday,) but in the meantime you seem a little unclear about the relationship between the ATD and the gear. The ATD includes the gear, they are not separate items. This means that the Enfield Bullet unit is quite unusual compared to other units fitted to British bikes which partly explains it's rarity. However, as Adrian says the distributor will also fit and is much easier to find.

There are other magneto options you can try if the ATD search is fruitless, but persevere for now as they can be a bit(?) more expensive. A

Ey up scalyback/adrian. Neither of you are far from the truth. Only joking. Had a call from Mark M, nice guy. Gave me some great advice, tried a couple of his suggested contacts but to no avail. finding an original enfield ATD lucas part 47556 will not be easy, they where only made for about 3 years.

and sales of enfields where already dwindling by then.



an other solution is to adapt a ATD from another make of motorcycle to the enfield.

the base components of the ATD are all the same.

they divide in two base groups left or right advancing(and even this can be modified, but is a lot more work).



for the enfield you need a left advancing type.



at the moment there is this one for sale on eBay.

this one is one of the easiest to adapt to your needs.

you will need to modify a enfield idler pinion so that it can be riveted to the ATD instead of the pinion thats on there at the moment.

and the springs need to be changed to, they are in stock at the moment.
