my `56 clipper 250 hasn`t run for many years, i got it started today and there was a load of smoke which didn`t look like it was ever going to stop ! i assume it has wet sumped and i want to check which plug is the sump and which the oil tank drain.. is it like the bullet where the plug nearest front wheel is the sump ?

The type of plugs used changed later in the 50s to avoid this confusion and I can't remember what yours should look like! It is illustrated in the Manual and if you haven't got one I seriously recommend you do. Also there is a Group especially for 250 Owners at [email protected] where you will find helpful Owners photos and other files.

Boris on a bullet it is not the plug nearest the front wheel.

Thanks Mark m but my clipper is the pre unit one, i have the manuals but they don`t show which plug is which,

thanks papasmurf, not sure if that helps or not ! i think i will just drain them both and see which one has the most in..

Boris, I should have spotted that, there wasn't a Crusader based Clipper in 1956, doh! I don't think you can do any harm by removing both plugs, there are filters on them that need cleaning anyway. On the Crusader the smaller plug is there just to cover a manufacturing drilling and removing it can destroy the threads causing serious problems which is why I was being cautious!

it was the front one, very little oil came out, i will try to start it again and keep it running longer to see if the smokescreen clears, thanks..
