Hi there i have two 1964 royal enfield walabys and i know very little about them.
im starting to restore them and i could really do with knowing a bit more about the machines.

the wallaby was a crusader based machine built for the Australian agricultural industry so its a trials bike.

dose anyone here know what crusader they were based on? i have most of the parts but im missing the high level exhaust which i can imagine was pretty unique to the wallaby. apparently they only made a handful of these and im hoping a lot of parts were used on other models

if any one has any knowledge on these bikes and is willing to share i would love to hear from you

yer i had heard that its a privilege to have two of them im hoping that some where out there someone has some kind of parts book or other literature on them. i have joined the club but it looks like the archive department is not running at the moment so i dont know how i will go with that

Before this, when RE's were badged as Indians for sale in the USA they produced the Hounds Arrow and the Fire Arrow based on the unit 250s, the Hounds Arrow having the high-level exhaust, Woodsman style. Have a look here and scroll down to the next to last picture.

Papasmurf's picture shows something similar to the 350 Bullet Trials exhaust, and there's a Crusader scrambles bike in our host's for sale section with an almost identical system fitted, so it might be worth asking our hosts if the 350 trials exhaust fits or can be made to fit without too much grief. I have a suspicion that our host's Woodsman system for the 350 Bullet might also fit.

Daniel, there is a specialist group for the 250 Crusader models including the Wallaby at Yahoo Groups Royal Enfield Crusader Technical Group. We have a member who is building a Wallaby here in the UK and he has probably amassed more information than anyone else. Come over and sign in and introduce yourself!

Interesting picture. The fork shrouds and headlamp brackets look like left-over Fury items. A.

Yes, Fury, late Tomahawk, Apache and VAX Interceptor all had these brackets. I'm using them on a project Trailblazer rather than the correct for 1957 "flag" items which are just the ugliest things ever fitted to a motorcycle. The Wallaby pic was collected by Bill, the guy on the Crusader site I was talking about. Another bike that went to Australia that doesn't seem to have turned up at all was a Bighead Bullet for the Australian Army, again with similar high level exhaust.

Adrian, the only picture I have seen is on page 131 of Gordon May's book "By Miles The Best". It says "1960 Australian Army Big Head Bullet built to USA Export specification." There is only a right side pic, but it is obviously a Factory shot. Things to note, high level pipe on right, pannier frame fitted on left (just visible) and all over dark finish. These seem to be a bit of a mystery as I think the REOC Chairman Graham Scarth hasn't been able to find any record of them.
