Hello All
I have been searching through all the old posts and cant find the info all in one place so hope someone can advise?
In the interests of simplicity and because I like old school tech I am wanting to retrofit a magneto ignition to my 2001 500cc bullet trials bike.
It currently has the 4 wire ACDC alternator and that's it but am hoping to keep for basic lighting.
I know an anticlockwise Lucas SR1 should fit straight on (taper drive no halfmoon key) - but are there an alternatives that are also a straight fit? I am thinking Lucas K1F or Wipac Wico model A perhaps.
Anyone know at all?
Advice or Lucas SR1s££ gratefully received!
Cheers

If the 2001 has the same mounting as the UK made ones which I believe it has then you can fit the Lucas K1F and similar using the adaptor plate from the Constellation part No 422449.

You can fit an SR1 they go straight on and they are reversable so direction shouldn't be an issue. What does need to be factored in is the advance and retard. You require the appropriate lucas style advance mechanism that is incorporated into the drive gear.

Thanks for the info so far chaps. Simon by reversible do you mean it will produce a spark in either direction? I always thought they were strictly one way and had to be converted at some cost to run opposite way? Ive never tried running a mag in reverse for fear of disrupting the time/space continuum!

Sorry forgot to ask wont it run without advance/retard? I cant see how there is room for a mechanism inside the drive case??

The Lucas SR1 is a very good and reliable magneto, I wouldn't bother with the alternatives. The bulge on the 1956 onward timing cover is there to accommodate the auto advance, so you should be able to fit one to the later engines. They will run on fixed timing, but will be a bit evil to start. BUT if you are retaining the alternator why not just fit electronic ignition?

Yes the SR mag's will fit straight on and are one of the best Lucas made, as stated the SR series can be reversed quite easily by moving the points cam I believe.

Just a personal opinion but having a fixed ignition on a trials bike if it is actually going to be used as a trials bike seems to be a very bad idea.

Hi, While a K1F magneto will fit the cases I think your'll find it will be mounted to far across for the gear to locate on the taper. Twin spockets are longer to compensate for the spacer. Vince
