As a first step I would suggest putting your meter across the battery with the engine running and then switch on the lights then check the voltage

I had the same problem on mine, caused by a faulty headlamp bulb. It lit OK but a bad earth connection inside the bulb caused the problems. It could just as easily be in another part of the lighting circuit, the pilot light wiring is shockingly flimsy and not fit for purpose. It might be a case of disconnecting each bulb in turn to see if the fault disappears and go from there. A bad earth causes very strange problems.

Hi Spro. I think I had a similar problem on my Electra X many years ago. And ended up having to ride 20 miles home, in the dark with no lights. It turned out to be a malfunctioning reg/rec, if I remember correctly. Replaced the 'Swiss' unit with a power box and never had these weird kinds of electrical problems again.

Tornado had one of these. Someone had moved it to the toolbox so that it overheated when I started using the headlamp.

My tuppence - Exactly the same problem last year on my Electra. The wire in the Headlamp unit had chaffed and was earthing. My local RE specialst advised this was a common issue! Good luck and post the cause/remedy of your issue!
