RE gearbox

Hi guys,
I would just like to say a massive thank you for all of the help I have received with technical help. I have a RE classic 350cc (2007). I had previously installed a set of close ratio gears from our hosts (which worked great). However, when I am maneuvering in 1st gear with the clutch pulled fully in, I cannot move the bike backwards. If anyone has any ideas I would be most grateful.

Kickstart pawl is not parking properly.

Hi guys,
Yes putting it into neutral would work, but I wanted to do it in first gear. Is changing or altering the kick start pawl easy to do.

I would first check that the clutch is completely disengaging. A dragging clutch will do just as you say.

As you have done the close ratio set it will be simple for you. Just pay attention to where the pawl parks. A bit of fettling may be required. A dragging clutch will make reversing difficult, the pawl can stop you completely. If you get a clunk when engaging first the clutch may be dragging.

Poor bike! even with the clutch in, they tend to rub and warm up whilst standing at junctions. Trying to push it backwards in first is probably not a good idea.
jap bikes, I pull the clutch in (when I used to ride them) Enfields go into neutral if stationary for more than a few seconds.

Are the few seconds necessary to engage neutral and the first so vital or is it just lazinness that makes you abuse the transmission?

I don't think the clutch is dragging, but please could you advise how to alter the kick start pals.

Tech notes here on the left on how to replace the pawl. Just pay attention to make sure it returns to the parking slot with no stick out. It becomes obvious when you have it in bits. A bit of filing/grinding may be necessary.
