In my opinion that primary chain is on the tight side. Usually there is a tight spot at some point of the rotation and that would be boarder line too tight for the tight spot. Others will no doubt disagree but I thing the chain is better off a bit loose than too tight as long as it isn't tapping the case obviously.

I'll also take a punt as say that plastic shite is the chain chewing a groove in the slipper tensioner.

I would also suggest the the the material is from the chain adjustment slipper. I think the chain tension looks OK, although it may be a good idea to check for tight spots as Simon suggested might exist. Unlike the rear chain the centres are fixed so you don't require the same ammounts of slack.

Scalyback, if you ever do find out what the cag, goo, is can you post the result on the forum. My Electra X threw out similar externally that strips paint. It only did it once and the source of it remains a mystery.

Looks like the crap I had in my 4spd when I blew the alt I would check the alt rotor airgap but has anyone noticed the slipper seems way to biases t o chaincase outer my chain runs about 3mm from back of slipper and stacks of free space on the outside. Looks like they bent it the wrong way.

Mark M says,

Simon, l can't post on H's at the mo. I have seen your goo before, it is usually the rubbers in the clutch bedding in especially if new. It won't be the slipper as this is steel. Don't worry about wear grooves in the slipper, they all do that and get no worse. The goo is best wiped out for peace of mind. It should be ok but keep an eye on it, l have come across rubbers made of the wrong stuff but that was a long time ago. Post on H's for me to put the idea out please?

As Mark says, cush drive rubber, set chain at tightest point so it has all slack taken up but not under any tension.
Hope you get back on soon Mark some will be lost without you?.

hi all hope this help with chain tension the primary drive chain is correctly adjusted—with about 1/2 inch movement at the centre of the top chain run (no more than 1/4 inch in each direction). Check the chain tension in 3 or 4 places. If necessary adjust the chain tension by screwing or unscrewing the adjuster bolt on the tensioner pad.
this is on abullet in tech notes cheers phil
