Hi all, I am looking to remove the gearbox from my '92 500 Bullet Classic, is it possible to remove and replace the gearbox while leaving the engine in situ? I know that I would need to remove the centre stand and I already have the swinging arm out for other work..

Thoughts appreciated

I assume you can do as you suggest - I've done the opposite (removed engine and left gearbox in situ). You'll need to extract the four studs that hold the gearbox and engine together. I'm not sure about the centre stand, you may be able to leave that in situ too and lift the gearbox up if there's enough frame clearance. I'm sure others will have the definititive answer on that!

Lennie i'm sure you have a reason to remove the box but i just wanted to make sure you're aware that the box can be striped in situ..

Bearings, gears, and shafts.. All except the gear selector, or bell crank as some call it, which is a solid bit of kit and very rarely needs replacement anyway..

To be honest its such a faff gaining access, i.e. primary off etc. you may be better dropping the whole assy out and then split it..
In danger of teaching granny but i thought i would mention it anyway..

Thanks Gents, thought I would follow up, just for completeness. Gearbox exchange leaving the engine in situ, is a very easy task and all completed within a couple of days.

Gwilly, I appreciate your comments, but the gearbox was 'shot' and I had a spare which I know to be good, I probably could have exchanged the internals, but I also wanted to fit a 19 tooth sprocket at the same time, so would have required a full primary side strip anyway.

I was just about to reply to this! I have just extracted the gearbox from my S2 Interceptor yesterday. Pretty straight forward and centre stand can stay in place. The job is slightly harder on the S2 because there is a strengthening block behind the gearbox but this can be eased back enough to free the box. Now to replace the gear selector pin which is hopefully the cause of crap gear selection!
