Hi,
If it smokes and then clears and runs normally its just just pumping out excess oil in the sump. As long as oil is showing on the dip stick there is enough in there. these models have a split oiltank in front and behind the flywheel cavity. The oil in the timing chest can drain down into the sump over night if timing bush is worn. It takes very little oil to create a smokescreen

i have only had my 1948 model j for a few months ,so i have done a bit of research on the subject. .i bought the workshop and instruction manual from hitchcocks. oil tank capacity, 4 pints. 2.3 liters. i also bought the push and turn dipstick , that is easier to read because it is wider than the original and has marks on it. previous owner only used to have about 15 mill of oil showing. . what i have had trouble doing is putting the primary cover back on. the inner rubber is very wide also i used silicone . the primary is still leaking . so i will have another go. , rick
