It could be the cable starting to fray. Have a look where the cable enters the gearbox and see if the adjuster has screwed itself in

Clutch is still as light as a feather,(frayed cables in my experience make the clutch action tight) nothing was loose anywhere either end of the cable.
Bike is in for a service shortly I will get the mechanic to check the clutch whilst the cover is off.

Mine on my ElecraX went very suddenly, and it was the cable, so I agree with Davie's recommendation. Also check you have the modified clutch cable and actuating (scissors-type) mechanism which is designed to prevent this happening - the mod includes a curved tubular cable entry point on the gearbox.

Modified clutch cable? I can't find that listed.

Is it possible that the last time the cable was disturbed (for whatever reason) that one end of the outer sleeve ended up resting on the edge of the cup in which it should sit and has just decided to jump into the cup? Or that something had gotten trapped under the end of the cable outer and just decided to crumble? Stranger things have happened. I would be tempted to adjust out the slack and ‘suck it and see’. Adam, I intended to "double up" on Bowden cables on the bike anyway I have just ordered a set of cables from our hosts plus the clutch pad with bearing.
Having had a chat with an "expert" the clutch cable stretching before it fails is common. The replacement on the way is an English made cable.

The cables do snap where they adjoin the actuator lever due to twisting and poor angle..

There have been more than a few where the lever gives out on the ball and ramp mechanism as pictured courtesy of Mr Snidal..

Our host do a modified version with swivel attachment for the cable. hopefully to lessen the problem.
See top assembly.
