I am in the middle of changing the oil on my EFI.I don't have a workshop manual but I seem to recall that as well as changing the oil and filter there is another filter on the underside of the crankcase which needs cleaning out?If I am right I assume it's the one that needs 2 8mm headed bolts screwing out to take off the cover plate and it's just a gauze filter that needs cleaning in petrol?

Hi Martin

I hope you have also realised by now that the oil capacity stated in the manual is complete fiction. Mine takes about 2 litres to fill to the middle of the sight glass. Fill it to that level, run the engine for a couple of minutes to spread it around the gearbox, primary chaincase etc., leave it a minute or two to drain back and top it up again if you need to - it wont need much more. If you put the 2.7 litres in that manual says, it will blow out of the breather into the airbox - all over the air filter, then leak out over the back of the bike and the garage floor. Guess which idiot has been there and done that!

Martin/Jack the Lad-yes thanks I didn't bother measuring oil the oil-I just topped up to the sight glass, ran the engine and topped up some more. This is the third oil change I have done on this bike(I used to have an Electra X before)so I knew what to do except as I implied in my original post I have never used the other drain plug before but in future I shall undo both.

On the newer efi engines there is also a smaller drain plug towards the front he crank case, I put a 500g yoghurt pot under it thinking there would only be a small amount in that par of the engine filled it to overflowing

At last the secret of how to find the missing 0.7 litres has finally been revealed; unbelievable to think it was hiding inside the engine all along and not just a myth or workshop manual misprint.

From what I have read on the efi engines without the extra small drain plug a lot of leaning from side to side and shaking about gets some of it out
