I thought I'd show you the damage caused to the back of my contacts plate by the advance weights behind it. There is enough end play on the distributor shaft to allow them to grind away the condensor. It doesn't help that the condensor protrudes throught the back of the plate. This probably also causes havoc with starting if the weights get stuck at any time. I've put a new contact set on and bent the condensor mounting a little so it doesn't get in the path of the weights.

Sounds like the contact breaker shaft (not really a distributor on a single, is it?) could use a thrust washer to take up the slack. Does this one have the plain bush spindle bearings or the later ball bearings?

I'm not sure, Adrian. It's a 2004 model Sixty 5. Yes, if I get the same problem with the new contact set I will have to sort out the play in the shaft. How did you get my photo to show up in your reply? I couldn't find any instructions on here on how to post photos.

I have a 2003 Sixty5 and it has the ball race unit. There is also a circlip which I believe holds the shaft to the bearings. Maybe that is missing or out of the groove? Check out the parts diagram to see what should be there.

Mine looked exactly the same. Don't think anything missing as it'never been dismantled. Not a problem any more as I fitted electronic ignition.
