For various reasons I haven't used my 350 Classic much in recent years. I have only done about 3000 Km over the last 4 years and the oil feels fine, doesn't smell used and is a very light brown. How often do I need to change it - is it mileage or time related, or both?

PERSONALLY, I change the oil and filter on our motorcycles at least once a year even when one of them has hardly been used.

My bikes never reach the recommended millage over the course of a year for an oil change but they all ways get one weather they like it or not Ammo my Bullet had new oil and filter yesterday its second oil change and only just over 1000 miles

My car mechanic (and that's mechanic, not technician) says oil should be changed every year regardless of mileage. It does go off apparently. He also disregards manufacturers recommendations which can now be as high as 18,000 between changes and recommends 10,000 maximum on any modern car.
As he's looked after my cars for 35 years without trouble I tend to value his opinion.

You can wash the RE felt filter in petrol...

It is mostly fouled with carbon soot.
