Hi I,ve owned a RE Continental GT , for 35 years and am just getting around to putting it on the road !!! . I've never had a log book. On inspecting the engine number their is a number but no GT stamped next to it, every think about the bike seems right, is their supposed to be GT stamped on the crankcase, any GT owner's out there ?

JJ, I had an early GT engine in a later GT chassis, probably one of the first batch and it did not have the GT prefix. It was officially dated by the Royal Enfield Owners Club, so definitely correct. The first bikes, probably a batch of 200 machines, had grey frames, alloy mudguards and no cover over the electrics. All these were changed for 1965 onwards so yours might be correct. There is a Group especially dedicated to the 250s, we have a lot of info and knowledgeable members, come and introduce yourself at https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Cru ... group/info

Thanks Mark,
That's reassuring. Yes it has an alloy front mud guard, what were the later ones made of ?
So the frame might be grey/silver underneath , I'll do so scraping to see. It has a fibre glass cover over the electrics but the battery is exposed.

JJ, later guards are steel, the alloy ones vibration cracked very quickly apparently. Your bike may have been improved over the years and components changed or added, there is also some doubt about when the electrics cover was introduced. Pop into the Yahoo site I gave the URL for and post some pics? By the way, a proper Dating enquiry to the REOC will give the definitive answer!
