Kick start pawl replacement

2001 Bullet 500 with skipping kicker.
Disassembly (in progress) per technical notes.
After removal of the main shaft nut, the instructions direct "Undo and remove all the bolts and five screws holding the inner gearbox case in position."
Murphy hangs out in my garage every once in a week, and this afternoon was just such an occasion. One of the aforementioned inner cover bolts sheared off with hardly any effort at all. Not sure what was up with that, but now I'm shopping for another bolt and a Helicoil set. But I digress.
Here's my burning question:
One of the inner cover screws on my particular gearbox is located directly behind the the gear selector adjuster plate. I'm inclined to remove the adjuster plate but hesitate only because the instructions admonish: "Do not remove the adjuster plate behind these components"...(foot control stop plate, inner ratchet and figure 8 spring)..."or loosen the studs as this will affect the gear selector adjustment."
I may have an anomalous gear box (I may have missed something too) but bottom line: I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to remove the adjuster plate and consequently adjust the shifter mechanism on reassembly. Does this sound right or am I missing an easier solution?
And if I do need to pull and replace the adjuster, I'd appreciate any leads on that procedure.

(Cross posting on the Enfield forum only because I can post a pic)

alphashifter,
You have to remove the selector plate, it's no big deal. To ease your mind, with a scriber mark the position of one of the studs holding the selector plate in position (these 2 holes are slotted for adjustment)so that when you reassemble it can go back in the same position. Then you can remove the inner cover but just be carefull you don't drag the gear cluster out with the cover

OK parts arrived last week and I have a day to work on this again.
During disassembly, I removed the kick start pawl stop plate (#12 on Page 23 of Hitchcock's parts fiche)and bolt (#31 on page 23).
The bolt sheared off with little effort and it appears that it was swaged, peined or otherwise mushroomed into place from the inner portion of the gearbox. I have a new replacement bolt but I wonder: do I need to do anything special with it? I am unaware of the means by which it was secured - will Loc-tite suffice, or should I just torque it in place?
