The gear lever on my four speed classic has too much play and is hitting the exhaust pipe. I dont want to raise it a notch as the angle would be unusable. Is there a fix for excess play at the pivot point?

If it was OK, and then decided to go slack, I would have a peeps inside the outer cover to see if anything is amiss.

You may be able to raise the footpeg up on the hex shaft and then you can move the shifter one spline, apart from that not much you can do, nothing inside will help

If the spring that returns the lever to its centre point is broken, then the lever will tend to hang down. Reasonably easy to replace.

I found on my bike when i had the same problem, that at some time the gear lever had been bent inwards. Its a long lever and quite soft metal.Just bend it out slightly, no need to remove it you can bend it out by hand.It wont reduce the play but in my case that was not the problem.
