Hi guys i have a 1960 Crusader sport which starts an idles well, but once i take off it starts to splutter and brakedown really bad as soon as i open the throddle and is unrideable,It wasent always like this, just one day i started it and that was the way it ran and havent been able to fix it since. I have replaced just about everything on the bike i can think of, plug, lead, condenser, coil, points, air filter, manifold casket, and so on,i think it is an electric problem by the way it bangs an misses, but not sure, if any body out there can help,it will be much apprecated.

Thankyou

Patrick

I used to have a crusader sport of same vintage, and what you're describing is exactly what happened if I started it with the ignition in the 'emergency' position. Is it possible that you've either turned the key the wrong way, or it's developed an electrical fault which shows the same symptoms? Good luck, Stephen

Unfortunately these symptoms can be caused by a weak spark OR a weak mixture. You seem to have eliminated all the stuff related to the spark apart from the supply voltage - as PO51 says, could it be in the 'emergency' position, or could the battery be flat? I would definitely check the battery voltage.

This leaves us with the fuel side. Fuel starvation causes just these symptoms, so I'd be stripping and cleaning the carburettor, looking for sludge or blocked jets. Also, with the float bowl off and the float hanging down, ensure that fuel will flow freely through the needle valve, stopping when you lift the float.

Hi Patrick. If it starts easy and idles then I doubt if it is electrics. I had something similar recently and I discovered that my petrol tap was faulty and only letting a little petrol through to the carb, Think you must check the petrol supply.
