Hi John thanks for the response I don't have access to a nut on the top. It's a chrome ring covering the nut I think , the nut is under the ring , I don't want to try to prize it or twist it for fear of scratching hell out of the whole lot.

Mmm, I not seen the chrome cover you have.
Only a nut. Your Ign. switch is in the R/H tool
box yes?.
Is there any castlelations on the chrome trim ring?. I would of thought that it screwed off.
Sorry I can't be of more help, perhaps someone else on here has seen this cover. I've checked the relevant parts book and can see it ther either, although the parts books are not that helpful at times like these.
could be something someone has fitted to improve the look of the original set up?.

The switch/ignition key is over the headlight in the casquett (forgive the spelling) I've tryed to in screw it with A channel locks but it's beginning to scratch it so I've stopped it's 2.5 to 3 inches wide with the key in the middle so it looks like a dressing of some kind . The switch is knackered so I may drill it out but if anybody knows the secret please help ..

It sounds like your describing the chrome housing that the ign. switch fits into on the casquette. this is a push fit with a rubber ring to hold it like the amp meter. My bike has this to, but there is still a nut in the center which releases the ign switch.
Difficult to be sure without seeing it.
Hope you manage to get it out.
