Silencer choice

Gents. This is in reference to my earlier post on overly-loud silencers on my 1996 535cc Classic, notably our hosts Reverse cone megaphone (PN91009, about 35cms long and actually made by EMGO). It was by far, the best-performing silencer I had acquired so I wanted to continue using it, but it was embarrassingly loud with a nasty ‘bark’ which I had to remove.
On posing the question to the internet, I found reference to a “goat crumb catcher†on a Ducati website (goat crumbs in a Ducati? – that explains it). This transpired to be a stainless steel wash basin drain (cost R31 or ~GBP2.00) – you know the type with half-a-dozen holes spaced radially around the central fixing hole.
I removed the plastic threaded waste pipe connector from the stainless steel plug hole, I drilled 3 holes through the flat shiny rim ( it’s ~1cm diameter) and bolted it onto the backplate plate of the silencer, looks like a hat. The cone still fits nicely over it all so it looks as though it belongs - all you can see are the 7 holes you normally see if you look down a plughole.
Did it work? – you bet it did. It removed the harsh bark from the sound and added just enough thump to make riding a pleasure again. Very worthwhile and cheap and easy to do.
If it needs more air flow, I could raise the ‘hat’ off the silencer backplate with a cm-stack of washers later.
The engine still doesn’t run well, see my cam and carb concerns, but it sure sounds better!
Cheers, ChrisD
