Drive sprocket for Chief/Apache

Hi All,

I was wondering if would it be possible to replace the main sleeve in the Chief/Apache with one that is made to take the H49 sprocket? This would then give a choice of 20T, 21T, or 22T sprockets for my Chief.

Regards Charles

Charles, don't forget I have a 22 here that I have just removed from the Meteor but that will depend on what engine sprocket the Chief is running. What does it have on it at the moment? I should have looked closer at the Apache one at the time but I was a bit rushed, needed to get the Super Apache up and running

Charles that is gearbox, what size is the engine sprocket?, quite possibly a 33 and if that is the case then 20 is all you need on the gearbox, it will struggle to pull any bigger and will run out of puff on hills. Your Inter has a 29 engine sprocket and that is why you can run a 22 on the gearbox

My motor is late 1960, so it will either be the same as a Super Meteor or a Constellation, if they are different.

Cheers Charles

Charles, do you know if there is a parts book anywhere on the Chief gearbox, otherwise I think the only way you will be able to work it out is to either pull Dons box apart which will need rebuilding anyway or pull yours apart, either way no big deal

Hadn't thought about Phil, he would probably know or have a mainshaft sleve you could check

Got this from the Inter site.

G'day Charles,

I don't have any internals from an H-type Bullet or twin 'box to hand, but I seem to recall that the sleeve has 5 splines each end. The AM I had on the bench a few weeks ago had 6, both ends. If new sprockets are not available, I reckon you only have a few options: commission some, find a good used one, get an old sprocket retoothed, or fit a different 'box. The 'standard' Albion 4-speed 'box, with either pushrod or scissor clutch, as used on nearly all the other twins, will bolt straight in. If you do this, be prepared to address chain alignment and clearance issues if you are sticking with the fat 16" wheel and tyre.
