I've bought the Boyer electronic ignition kit. Having read the instructions, I'll probably get round to doing the actual conversion within the next week.

So here's my question: In the instruction sheet, it says to dismount the seat and install the Boyer unit under the seat. I wondered, is this for cooling purposes or for ease of access to the loom? Or both? Or can I 'hide' the unit somewhere, like the left hand toolbox? (I'd really like to hide it if posssible.)

Any advice is gratefully received.

Might do a pic sometime to illustrate the mounting plate I made that sits across the front seat mounts. On that plate is the Boyer ignition, Boyer Powerbox and flasher relay. Out of the way, away from the elements and in an airflow.

I need to get this the right way around or I will get shot down by everyone!

A regu-regulator OR rectifier and regulator OR a boyer powerbox should be mounted outside (under seat is good) to allow the heat dissipate.

A boyer electronic ignition can be mounted in a toolbox as it does not generate much heat. Tornado has one in his left toolbox (sitting on bike left...) and there have never been any noticeable heat or function problems. The only bad point is that the sticky sponge double sided sticky tape that it is (not) stuck on with, seems not to hold and the unit drifts around a bit. I just not got to that on my "Improvements" list yet!

Everybody will have a preference for points or electronic, but the boyer system works very well on my 1994 bullet.

PLUS...

One of Tornado's previous 'Mentalgen' owners had stuffed the regu-rectifier in the tool box, and when I switched from LED to a halogen for a night trip to the Kent ROAC meeting, it toasted itself

MOREL...

a) Ignition, wherever you like, toolbox makes it neat!

b) Regulators and things, under the seat or somewhere where air can circulate, especially when stationary.

Seem to notice that quite a few folks fit Boyer boxes inside tool boxes.
The reason my boxes of electrickery things are outside is that I use the tool boxes, apart from a few tools wrapped in a greay rag and a cigarette lighter thing for mobile phone charging, as storage.
Different folks, different strokes :)

Thanks for all of this. I think I'll go for the tool box then..

I've seen the double sided sticky tape on the unit and, frankly, I had my doubts about it when thinking of the vibration that everything gets subjected to on the road. I could fabricate some sort of bracket or clamp to hold the thing in place inside the box.

In my ignorance, i have for some years had a Boyer Powerbox mounted in the lefthand toolbox, and it has come to no harm. I have also recently moved the ignition unit in there. It does not seem to get particularly hot. I have vaguely thought of adding a Peltier diode to refrigerate the toolbox.

heat depends on power usage

if you run the bike with no lights on, or with LED lighting, then you only really draw current for the ignition, and your power/regu/rectifier will not get too hot (unless charging from an almost flat battery until it charges.

If you drive at night, or use your lights during the day, you can add an extra 5-6 amps of current, and that will make the unit get hotter.

as above, mine was fine in the toolbox, until I changed LED headlamp to halogen to go out one evening, and the regulator just fried! Also, some will be better quality than others and mine could well have been a dodgy one.
