Did I see somewhere on this board that bathroom sealant is recommended for exhaust gaskets?

Yep. The clear silicone variety is surprisingly temperature resistant.

BUT - the collective wisdom seems to be that if you're going to use it in that role, you must let it set first (e.g. overnight), rather than using the heat of the exhaust to set it.



Personally I haven't tried it, but I wanted to pass on that extra piece of information in case it's important.

I am a bit puzzled why people need to put sealant on an exhaust gasket at all. I have never needed to ever. I just make sure the gasket is a modern one and only torque up the nuts to about 8ft/lbs.

Papasmurf, I use it around the joint between the pipe and the head and where the downpipe joins the silencer. Not a gasket as such.

It was used on the Cast Iron Bullets with the push in pipe that had no gasket, not needed with a gasket
