points adjuster thread stripped.

Good evening all,my 05 Bullet has developed a slight misfire, sometimes occurring at low revs, sometimes at cruising speed, but runs perfectly when revved in neutral, and ticks over without a bother.
This evening I took a look at the points which had recently been set at fifteen thou, and was surprised to notice they were wide open. No need for feeler gauge, the gap was MASSIVE. On resetting I found the adjusting nut quite slack. The reason for this being a stripped thread, probably caused by me not wanting the points to slip. I managed to re-set the points and tentatively tighten the but, but it didn't feel good.
So, my question is: Could such a big points gap cause the misfire. The bike always started first kick, by the way. And secondly, is there an easy fix for the stripped thread?
All help appreciated, Wilf.

Just taken the distributor back plate off to find the little stud which holds the points in place had parted company from the back plate. For want of a better term it appears to be passed through the back plate and spread/flattened,like a rivet. I've had a go at soldering it back, as I thought it a bit delicate to weld.(also I can't weld, but not bad at soldering!) Hope this holds, as a new back plate is £33+vat from Mr.H. That's a third of the way to electronic ignition.
