If my bike (1992 500 Enfield Bullet) has been left for some time without running occasionally when I start it, it dumps a load of oil on the floor (about ¼ cup full)?
Because I’m not expecting it I’ve not found where its coming out from but some of it hits the drive chain? Maybe the breather tube as that sits just above the chain? Of course it could even be gearbox oil but looks more likely engine oil?

Is this something to do with dry sumping or something?

Is there something I can do to prevent it happening as it makes a right mess of the floor where its been parked!!! Its also embarrassing if someone is watching me start the bike! The missus isn’t very happy either when it dumps it on the drive?
On daily runs its fine so its just when its been left a few weeks stood.

Maybe a "duckbill" in the breather sticking as it not run for weeks, anyway if you don't ride the bike often it would be best to start it once a week, the engine needs it, or you have to carry out" measures" to protect it.

You could use one of the breather kits on this site works well on my bike. The problem is usually caused where oil seeps into to sump when bike is parked especially if on side stand this pools in sump so when bike is started it gets blown out the breather hose. The breather kit fixed mine no more oiled rear tyre.

What I do is a much easier & cheaper fix and that is, if it has been left for more than a few days, to drain the crankcase & tip the drained oil back into the tank before running.
Get a couple of those Dowty seals that Mr H lists, they allow the crankcase plug to be removed & replaced many times more than using the standard fibre washer.

Yes, this is wet sumping. Try not overfilling the oil "tank" (half way between the lines is fine) and always parking the engine at TDC. This should put the big end bearing above the level of the oil in the "tank" and this can often solve the problem..

Also it helps if you plan to leave the bike unstarted for a longish time to leave the piston at as close to TDC as possible so the big end is at the top of its rotation. This helps reduce the syphon effect from the oil tank.

Has it got the short breather from the cylinder base? If so, fit a longer tube up and over to about battery height. Fit a duck bill to the end.

Wet sumping or your bike's got the hump. Probably wants you to use it more often!

TDC stop engine, kick slowly until compression, opreate decompression and push kickstarter a little listening for a wheeze. following vid shows it.
