distributer end float

How do folks,a bit of advice please.
I have removed the timing cover from my bullet sixty five in order to try and locate a lot of noise coming from this side of the engine.
I have located worn bushes on both idler pinions.which I have ordered.
My question is that I am able to move the distributor pinion in and out by .75 mm. This seems to me to be quite a lot so could anyone tell me if this is an excessive amount and if so , how can I rectify it ?

Sounds about what you would expect from an Enfield Johhny, .75 of a mm, Indians can't work to those clearances, how did you get such a good one

The Sixty5 dizzy has bearings instead of bushes, so shouldn't have much end float. With that amount, I wouldn't worry, just check that the advance unit isn't touching the inside of the points plate.

Thanks for your help folks, Thats something less to worry about then.I have still got a noisy engine and my solution up to now has been to turn off my hearing aid .It works every time !P.S. I have just spent an interesting hour fitting a pair of auto advance springs....never again ! !

Country boy what you could do is remove the timing cover, then remove the upper idler gear and spin the distributor gear to see if this is making a noise

Thanks Norm. I tried that when I changed the Idler bushes.seemed OK . it only made a noise when I pulled and pushed the idler gear. hence my end float question. The noise is quite a loud knocking and seems to come from the exhaust valve area when I listen with an old stethascope.I seem to have checked most things when I had the head off last time. I even fitted a spare head at one time ...no difference.I will put her back together and give it another try...watch this space !

Loud knocking noise not likely coming from the timing chest I'm afraid this could end up ugly before it gets better knocking is usually conrod/piston related
