Hi all, Out on Bertie today and found that I couldn't select 1st gear, so stepped up through the gears to try and free it and then it jammed in 4th gear and wouldn't come out , after forcing the gear lever up a couple of times with my hand it freed up and the gear change was a dream afterwards, anyone got any idea what happened ???

Something got jammed, then it un-jammed.
Seriously, if it's working fine, don't bother. If it happens again I'd look at the gear change mechanism.

He's getting you back for trying to sell him...Twice!

Seriously though, check the oil/mush level inside the gearbox.

Other than that, could it have been 'impatient foot'?

ELSE...

with engine not running and on centre stand (with the back wheel OFF the ground,

rock back wheel back and forth while applying pressure on the gear change.

Does not matter if you are going between gears and false neutrals, just 'feel' how the gear changer pedal rotates as you go up and down the gear box a few times.

nice and easy, no mad jerks or stamping. also Get him in 4th and again, slowly turning the back wheel (back and forth, direction is not too important), operate the neutral lever, feeling for any odd vibrations or stiffness as it rotates between the gears.

Obviously the lever will clonk as it selects the gears, but you are feeling for any roughness or stiffness during the gear and neutral rotation between the clonks.

This is not conclusive, but if he changes correctly, (Ignore the neutrals), then hopefully all is well. If not then there could be a selector or wear problem.......

OH,,, Check your clutch cable isn't about to snap!

I'd whip the cover off for a quick look the selector mechanism might have come loose or have a broken spring. I've found that ignore little problems often turn into big ones.

If a left-hand change, check the linkage underneath the bike, all it might need is a bit of lubrication.

I guess if it was in forth and he was trying to get the gear lever to go up, then Bertie has to be a right shift.

I seem to remeber left shift are 1 down, 3 up ? (Might be wrong!)

Well, you look after Bertie and I will be back in the UK around 5th Sept for a couple of months. Tornado will be going for brekkie at the Hollyville, weather permitting. I think he would like to meet Bertie! We could even swap 'spanner' stories!

Leon I'm staggered you still have a left change that works, but I can understand why you get 14 neutrals
