Good evening all, it's been a few years since I've had to remove a tyre, but I recently got a puncture in my back wheel and decided to fix it myself. All went well except that I can't get the tyre to run true on the rim, causing the bike to wobble like a drunken sailor. I've tried deflating the tyre and bouncing it heavily all the way round, to no avail. I've checked for run-out with the wheel back on the bike, and it's pretty good---about 3or4 mm out. Wheel alignment is spot on. Bike still wobbling badly. Any tips on trueing up tyre on rim?
Wilf.

First deflate the tyre and check the tube isnt pinched by the tyre bead. Then spread soapy water around between the tyre and rim with a paint brush or similar. Then inflate whilst keeping an eye on the line on tyre just outside the rim diameter. The secret is to inflate the tyre to more than the correct pressure, probably up to about 60 lbs or a bit more to seat the tyre evenly around the rim.

Thanks Netshubby,I'll give that a try. The line around the tyrewall is pretty even to the rim, going by eye. Obviously not near enough.

Hi guys-----------when doing this particular bit I have the tyre valve core removed and just hold the inflater lightly against the valve body, so that in the event of any probs. I just ease the inflater off the valve body for a rapid deflation....it's saved a few nipped inner tubes in the past !! PS}---- are you sure the rim is running true before the tyre is re-fitted ??

And is the line concentric on BOTH sides? Good tip from Alan, and using an air line at garage or a compressor works better too, and as Alan says with valve core removed, then when its true, replace core and inflate to pressure.

Thanks lads and sorry for the delay in responding. The rim is running true. The tyre is running true on one side, but balloons out on the side I levered off.I've tried lubing with soapy water and re-inflating to 60psi several times but still no good. I think I damaged the bead taking it off. No big deal as it's the original from 2005,so probably due for retirement (no pun intended).
Has anyone tried Mitas tyres? They're apparently made by a subsidiary of Michelin.

Mitas make nice rubber. Which one were you considering?

Hi Robin, I've ordered a Mitas h02 from a local dealer. Discretion forbids me to mention cost, but let's just say I'm very pleased.

Wilf, I will be interested to know what you think of the tyre when you have it on, I put one on my BSA B31 last year and it made the bike awful to ride it runs far too soft and the rear of the bike was all over the place in bends and I had to remove it, the maximum allowed pressure is far too soft for the weight is carries I suspect you will find the same on your Enfield, mine is a 350X19, I use other Mitas tyres on my Triumph with 18" wheels and they are great. Hope you have better luck than me.

I've worn a Mitas H01 at the front and Mitas H02 (3.5" and 4.00") at the back of my Electra. Decent if rapid wearing tyres but be wary on the wet.
