Morning.

The bike is a 2004 Royal Enfield 500 Bullet, fitted with electronic ignition.

On the way home the other night the bike was running well but from nowhere the bike just stopped. I pulled over and noticed that the amp meter was showing no amps, I checked the lights and horn and I had nothing. I called my father out and he arrived with a new battery, we connected it up and the amp meter went straight to the left and showed full minus amps and the fuse then blew. First thing I did was to check that we had connected the battery right and yes we had. I tried a spare fuse and that did the same. I called Carole Nash and they sent out a rescue track and that got me home. Last night after having the battery on charge I put it all back together, put a new fuse in and the same thing has happened the amp meter shows full minus amps. I have checked most of the wiring and can not find any shorts.

Anyone got an idea what it could be.

There must be a short in there somewhere or perhaps a component breaking down causing a short. If nothing is obvious you will have to isolate various sections of the wiring and try it again until the problem is localised. The wiring to the rear light is a weak point. Might be worth starting there.

Definitely a big short to earth, look for loose electrical components and check for wires chafing against the frame, tool boxes or other bodywork. Good luck.

I'd also look inside the nacelle (casquette?). Take the headlight out (one screw!) then have a shufty in there.

Hi Eddie850 and all, similar thing happened to me and turned out to be loose wire in the headlight region earthing itself as suggested by BarryN . Good luck with your investigation !

Thanks for all the replies. To be honest I have not had chance to look at it yet, but I will start within the head light. I wilol let you all know what the problem is when I find it. Thanks again.

Happened to me several times. It was exposed wiring for the rear brake light that occasionally touched the underside of the left hand-side battery cover - which was a homemade job by previous owner. Despite covering the wiring, repeated bumps and vibration led to the wiring being exposed, touching the panel and so on, with shorts, blown fuses and a couple of failed coils. No point in going anywhere until fixed.

Well, my wife found the problem. We started to look at it and she said well this is 1 problem and she pointed out the horn wires were touching the engine and had burnt. We replaced the wires to the horn and all came to light. Thanks for all your help.
