Another couple of wee electrical glitches arose on my bike in the rain yesterday and I just want to check something out. My three fuses on the EFI Electra (mounted individually in three black boxes on the battery retaining strap thingy) are looking tired, and the wiring is rusty and heat damaged (i.e. cracking and brittle insulation). This is a remnant of my catastrophic wiring/electrical failure last year, but they still do a job so I left them for the mo.

Anyway, I turned to them last night when I had a spare half hour. I think I am going to buy a small fuse board and mount waterproof fuses somewhere close by instead of what is there just now. But my questions are these... I *think* the fuses are for (1) power relay for when ignition is on, allowing power to flow around the entire loom, (2) fuel pump relay/EFI system (NB both of these relays are in the left hand side 'spectacle box shaped' casing on my bike) and (c) not entirely sure, but I think it is a chargnig system fuse, perhaps from the regulator/rectifer? When your bike has ignition on, but engine is not running, what size of current passes through these fuses on a bike that hasn't had major electrical failure?

I can't remember exactly my measurements from last night, but it was way under 1 Amp for all three with just ignition on (engine not running), and one jumped to 5 Amps when the headlight was switched on (60W bulb, 12 V, P = IV --> 5 Amps should be flowing). I just want a few figures to benchmark so I can find any potential shorts. It would be handy to know what current flows with the engine running through all 3 too so that the reg/rec system can be checked too.

Any help appreciated!!!

Its the fuses I'm looking at just now. Two fuses are in series with two of the three left hand side relays, and one is a wee bit dodgy I reckon. Hence checking current for shorts... flasher relay is next. One flasher is definitely drawing s higher current due to rust internals, but not sure if that is causing the overall ussue of EFI circuit cutting out. It cuts out when I brake or have indicators on... a wee investigation underway. Benchmarking fgures for current will come in gandy :)
