When you say 'nothing' do you mean the dipped beam goes off when you switch to high beam? What bike/year? Have you done any other tests other than swicth (e.g. continuity)?

Of course, you checked the bulb?! ;-)

There should be three wires... high beam feed, main beam feed and earth, all connected :) Also, check/replace the bulb. If that doesn't work... do you have a multimeter?

OK, first things first... take bulb out. With ignition on and light switch on for main beam check that you have 12V (ish) across the earth (probably green) and either amber or red. Given that your main beam works, this should be easy. Once that check is done, do the same for the high beam circuit with the high beam switch on (i.e. check for 12V across earth and the other wire (re or amber now). If you have 12V then it is the bulb or the connection between the bulb and the wiring loom itself which is at fault. Probably just needing a clean and wiggle.

If you don't have 12V across the high beam/earth at the bulb connection then trace the wires back to the switch itself and repeat the test there (you will probably have to unscrew the cover). If you DO have 12V across main beam/earth AND high beam/earth at the switch (but not at the bulb) then your wiring is damaged between the switch and the light itself. Check all three wires for continuity between switch and bulb. Repair the broken one.

If you DO NOT have 12V across high beam/earth AT THE SWITCH then your problem lies further back... should only take a few mins to do these tests.

Now, for the info I don't have. Does your high beam only light when the engine is running or can it go on when ignition switch is on but engine is off? Do you know where the relays/fuses are on your bike? I don't know the 2005 model at all, but if all the above tests fail then someone else will and can direct you to a fix... I hope.

Good luck!

Oh... and do you know where the main earth point on the frame is? Clean it... and check the negative terminal on the battery too... it might need a wee clean.

Michael ,
the main lights only work with the engine running , the pilot lights work with the ignition on , I do not know were the earth for the bike is but will try and locate and do the tests you mention many thanks for your kind help here I will let you know how I get on >>
cheers
