A wee question for the MOT wizards out there... my EFI exhaust silencer has a spare 'outlet' in it (i.e. a hole underneath as well as the big round one at the end!!!). I originally thought it was double skinned, so wasn't concerned about the 2p piece sized hole, but either they are not double skinned, or I have two holes cos its blowing.

Anyway, a new silencer is 700 quid (yes, really, 700 quid, aye right) so I won't be buying a stock replacement. There are more affordable options from our hosts which I will go for, but in the meantime will my hole fail the MOT whichis due up in a month or so?

And the other part of the question... will a JB Weld type product get me through???!!! Please don't tell me to just buy a new one... I know I should, but bits of my other vehicle keep falling off so that is getting some treatment at present!

Is this a rust hole or manufacturing made hole. If its a rust hole its not worth the effort of going to all the expense of repairing it by welding a new peace of metal over it which is the only successful way I can think of. Any patch repair like JB weld would soon blow out as the surrounding metal would be weak to hold it without supporting of some type. You could use that awful looking exhaust bandage but again its only temporary and looks awful on a bike.

Sounds like you just need to get through the MOT and winter..

Maybe a Tig welder could grind back to solid metal and weld up a patch..

Doesn't really matter what it looks like as long as its sound and fit for purpose..

Just thinking i bet someone on here has fitted a hitchcock loudner kit and has a spare torpedo sitting in the shed..

£50 quid plus postage, who knows?

There isn't much solid metal on the underside of my silencer!!! A grinder would leave not very much at all... As Gwilly says, I just want to get my MOT at the moment. Might go for the bandage thingy if it gets me my ticket.

Oh, and Paul, it is a rust hole... which appeared after a wee bit of prodding. Spare torpedos would definitely be considered if anyone has one :)

Michael, as per Gwillys comment, coincidentally I have a spare torpedo silencer off my 2008 350 Bullet which I could let you have for £40 plus postage. (It looks identical to our hosts 142901). It was only on my bike for a few months from new, until I replaced with the shorter less restricted pipe. It's been sat in my garage gathering dust ever since.

Let me know if you're interested.

Definitely interested Tim... what's your email address? Mine is [email protected] drop me a line by email and we can discuss it. The main thing I would need to find out is if it is compatible with a 500 EFI... am away for the weekend, but will be in touch afterwards.

Awwww.... just checked with our hosts fitting guides. Sadly the original 350 silencers dont fit the EFI 500 - wrong diameter :(

I can see why anybody wouldn't want to pay 700 for a new silencer, though I notice our hosts are selling their own silencers for the EFI's in the accessory catalogue for a lot less, including one in stainless steel! As far as compatability with other silencers goes, it just has to fit, and from others' experience it seems the ECU learns to deal with it. There's a clip on Youtube with someone happily running a newly fitted universal silencer on his EFI, though it was not sourced from here! I have a WS "sports" silencer off my Electra-X (1.75" inlet) doing nothing if you get stuck.
