I have just completed a veteran motorcycle rally covering 1200 km in 4 days, and have come to realise that my 1953 Model G really does make a lot of noise..... It has the standard downpipe and silencer, or maybe "silencer" is more correct. It is merely a piece of larger diameter tube. I can see through it, all there is inside is a couple of baffles reducing the inner diameter a little. .-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-

Does anyone know if there is another silencer that I could fit, that actually makes the engine less noisy without loosing (a noticeable amount of) performance? It would of course also be appreciated if it looks nearly similar to the standard one. .-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-

I have seen through the catalogue, but there are so many looking so similar but wothout description of the internals. I want to know if there is one that actually works. .-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-

I'd make up a baffle to go inside the end of the header and then inside the silencer. I quieten my homemade ones that way. Just make sure you drill sufficient holes to equal the diameter of the pipe.

One of our host's Indian shortie silencers might do the trick as a stop-gap measure, they have a bit more baffling to keep things quieter, though just how much depends on which supplier made it! I see they still list new ones for the '53 G in the online parts book.

Anders, I’ve a 535 Bullet and decided to change out the OEM torpedo. I’ve tried the reverse cone megga and the shortie (91007). Both are OK when idling (although the megga has a much nicer tone). But both are painfully loud on revving, the shortie being slightly the worse but with a very sharp ‘bite’ to the sound. Half throttle is awful and I’m so glad that I don’t get to hear the full throttle effect 'cos I left it far behind (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) but my wife says she can hear the bike from what must be a 2-3 kilometers away.
I too have found it frustrating that there’s no clear description of the innards of the silencer. I’m about to cut open the shortie silencer, even though its done barely 2000km, to see if I can mute it better. Will let you all know later.
I was also frustrated to discover that my new reverse cone megga had such minimal glass wool packing and so loosely bound together with wire that after ~15kms all the packing had slid down the silencer and some had even blown out (see my image on nearby message). I am now seeking stainless steel wool to properly pack it (with a covering of chicken wire) - will keep y'all posted on that too.
Hope you succeed in a single step but past experience tells me you won’t.
