Hi everyone ! ...
Has anyone converted their pilot lights into Indicators ?? I am in the process of "tidying up " my 500 with an american look and will be fitting some chrome bullet style indicators on the rear, But want to do away with the sticky out front ones, so am looking at wiring up the pilot lights as front indicators with Led bulbs replacing the standard ones so they will be brighter. ( lucas headlamp unit has a pilot light anyway ).... any suggestions or help ? thanks ..

Might be limited visually? I want car drivers to see my indicators and know my intentions clearly, I'm also not sure of the legalities. There are good alternatives to the standard Elelphant ear indicators in the catalogue. But each to their own, I personally like the pilots as daylight running lights.

Legally the indicators need to be separated by at least 300mm and each indicator needs to be at least 100mm from any dipped beam headlamp. They also need to be seen from the riding position or a tell tale warning lamp needs to be fitted. They also need an approval marking of 1, 1a,1b or 11 or be between 15w to 36w. I think you plans would fall foul of all these. Now where is my anorak?

Not only would your plan be illegal it would have the more serious effect of donning the cloak of invisibility. However, your machine to do with as you see fit

There is an alternative handle bar mirrors with indicators built in if you buy the black mirrors with blacken lenses they look like ordinary handle bar mounted mirrors until flashing. Being mounted high up in place of current handlebar mirrors offer improved visibility to other drivers.

Thanx Paul , I think i will go with the Harley style ones that are fitted to the handlebars, will be in keeping with the look I am going for, as I already have a light bar and driving lights fitted, I will be reverting to "old " style lucas switches with bolt on mirrors rather than modern looking ones..

Hi Lycan-Moon... I have done the mod turning pilot lights into indicators (LED). At that time I had already mounted the BMW style indicator lights to my handle bars. Bacause of this the law aspects never played a role in my thoughts on the subject. I haven't been stopped by the police, so I believe it's legal... Anyway, I really like the outcome both looks and safety wise... Jacob
