Anyone know why this kit is not suitable for road use ?

Well for a start you would have no generator for lights or battery charging as its mounted in its place. May be more reasons.

For a tuned engine, these kits are the way to go to ensure accurate ignition timing. As has been mentioned, though, you lose the alternator. Maybe a dynamo, or one of those modern alternators designed to replace Lucas dynamos, could be mounted in place of the distributor....loadsamoney!

Ok might be a stupid question, i assumed that like my old Honda, the replacement unit would do both charge and ignition,and if this replaces the generator what powers the ignition ? and yes it is expensive !

The Lucas SR1 fits straight on the Iron barrelled Bullets and whilst it needs an auto advance which isn't cheap it is a very satisfactory set up. If you want to go nuts with money you could buy one of the new BTH branded SR1 shaped mags that has rare earth magnets and electronic advance. Could be a bit of an over kill though.

The ignition will powered by a battery until it goes flat, then it will have to be recharged somehow since they will be no charging facility on the bike. Fine for racing etc but no good for a road bike.

The crankshaft ignition unit is SELF GENERATING - no battery is required. We have three Bullets using these systems, they give very accurate ignition timing, but can give rise to difficult starting on the kick when firing two plugs.
