Rear Brake Pedal

Hi guys
I've discovered that the shaft of my rear brake pedal (1996 535cc Classic), close to the pivot, is bending down - becoming cheese-like. I can tell because of all the strips of chrome peeling off (stuck in my fingers, some of them were) and of course the brake pedal is operating lower and lower (not due to wear). A new brake arm one is ~GBP22 (it's actually almost double that price with P&P, South African tax and customs as well), but will it be any better? Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what is the fix?
