I'm thinking about buying the RE magnetic tank bag supplied by Watsonian -Squire. I want it for occasional use on day trips.

I'd appreciate feedback from anyone who has used one of these bags.

The main problem with magnetic tank bags is the danger of getting swarf or some other metal stuck to the magnets. You then clap it on your tank and scratch the paint.

Fido, Pete F is right about scratching the tank, I accidentally did this on my BMW when a small stone got between the bag and the tank but if I'd taken it off properly instead of peeling it off it wouldn't have happened! Only other thing I've found is that if you use the bag fully expanded it can flop sideways but a bungee strap over the top of it sorts this out.

Thanks Mark and Pete. I'm hoping that someone here has actually used the specific RE bag and can say something about it's features and quality. I'll clearly need to be careful to avoid tank damage.

Hello matey !!---------- Our hosts bag is typical for size, versatility and quality for that price range. A piece of thin plastic square sheet placed as per under a horses' saddle will protect the shiney paintey. The map holder is particularly useful whilst the carry-handle/strap gives different permutations for off-bike carrying.The top can be extended up for increased capacity but, best of all--------------- you get the "Royal Enfield" logo in big, gold lettering. My most recent use of my tank-bag ??----------delivering 2 Honda 50 cylinder heads for shot-blasting (too heavy for my shoulder bag). PS---- you can "park" it on the side of a steel cabinet when not required.

Fido, I've found that a suitably shaped piece of that non-slip material used to stop plates moving around on tables works well between a tank bag and the tank. I think campers and yachties use it and I've also seen it in bike accessory catalogues from time to time.
