Hi, my recently acquired 2000, 500 Bullet, is miss firing under acceleration. It has been fitted with electronic ignition. It was running fine for approximately 30 miles but then started to miss fire. I have been running with my headlight on. The spark plug and carburettor seem to be ok. Volt meter is not giving much of a positive reading mainly staying in the middle. Any ideas on what might be causing the problems?? Thanks

Not quite clear JW did you or someone just fit the electronic ignition or was it fitted before your ownership.. If its just been done and you've managed thirty miles then get back in and check whatever was touched last.. IE poor connection, loose wire that sort of thing... What ignition is it? Pazon, Boyer,

If its been there a while then the early models would suffer if the battery voltage went low and this is what it sounds like to me..

Use a multimeter across the battery posts and check if the voltage increases with engine revs. Could be a faulty reg/rec or alternator or simply a wire loose on the charging circuit..

Expect a reading of 12.5vdc increasing to 15.00vdc from tick over to fast revs...

Thanks for the advice Gwilly. It's a Boyer system and it would seems it's been on the bike since 2011. I'll have to borrow a volt meter to check the output. Thanks for your help.

Just on the off chance, you're not leaving the choke on? Easy to do as the original carbs don't have a choke as such and sometimes run quite happily with the enrichment jet on until they get hot.
Lever UP is "choke" OFF.

Thanks PeterF, yes choke is off, in the up position. Have checked the spark plug and colour seems normal so doesn't appear to be running to rich!

Try a new plug properly gapped at 18 - 20 thou which is 0.018" - 0.020" or in the quasi european napoleonic system of measurement 0.45mm or 0.50mm
