Really Weird ringing noise
It was a lovely sunny day, so off on a run on my EFI and the whole trip went well right up until I pulled back into my drive. Was only going slowly when I suddenly heard quite a loud metallic ringing noise from near the front of the bike.
It sounded so strange and I instantly reached for the clutch lever, in case the engine was about to fail, but after about a second and a half, the ringing went quiet. Having come to a stop, I tried revving a little, then checking the mirrors, and all other rattly things, but to no avail.
The noise never did return but it had been such a loud and almost musical ringing that it had quite alarmed me.
Parked Thunderbolt and started to clean (Had been through the fields and woods, YAY!) and then I spotted the culprit!
I had bought the 'Neolite' headlamp with motovision bulbs from our hosts, and well bright and good it has been too, but it was this that had caused the odd sound. Inside the headlamp shell, there is a metal cap on two support legs that sits between the bulb and the glass, presumably as a light shield from the end of the bulb. When I got to cleaning the headlamp glass, I could see that this shield was sitting in the bottom of the headlamp shell with one of the legs completely detached! My guess is that one of the joints between the cap and the two legs has failed, causing the cap to vibrate against the leg, producing the ringing noise. With the integrity of the assembly now compromised (had to look that all up.) Thunderbolt just rattled the bloody thing into pieces within two seconds, explaining why the sound never repeated!
Guess I will have to get another sent out, but am of course in France at the moment. But what an unexpected thing to happen. Bugger!
