small hole in crankcase

Hi there,
Today I discovered a small hole approximately 2 mm between the crankcase and the oil reservoir. ( I have the engine '92 classic 612 dimantled)Because the hole is on the top end of the reservoir there will hardly any oil pass through it I suppose but air under pressure from the crankcase will! On the other hand, it's only two mm and and pulsating say 3000 times/minute so i don't think it is a big deal.
Should I have this hole welded? I have never ever had any trouble from it! The hole looks drilled. Why should one drill a hole at that spot? Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance,
Marcel

If its the one i'm thinking of its supposed to be there… breathes through the tank instead of under barrel spigot..

Picture would be helpful if possible...

What Marcel describes is correct and is the reason for not filling the oil tank much beyond half on the dipstick

Thank you for the replies!
Hmm, still wondering why it's there. |I think whith the engine running a 3000 r/m there is hardly any effect of this hole. Any suggestions?
all the best, Marcel

The hole is a breather and overflow , I opened mine up a bit but the tiny hole in the oil cap makes that mod silly as unless one is going to change breather pressure like an JAP ..leave it alone .

Its been discussed before and a photo shown. My '99 has it, certain earlier ones don't. I guess it was just to equalise pressure in the oil tank, its pretty high up so no danger of flooding the crankcase.

Apologies all round, my memory must be more than a little defective. Whilst my memory tells me one thing Gwilly photo and mine agree showing a drilling rather than a slot half way down the back of the cases. I wonder what I have seen in the past that put me on the wrong track?
