I want to fit an Indian motor and gearbox into a Model G frame, I have never had a really close look at the frame and where the gearbox bolts on, I know the gearbox has the tube running between the box and the motor but I'm not sure what would be involved in making it fit together. Also does anybody have a measurement between the frame where the rear spindle fits, I want to see if I can fit an Indian wheel in there. I can get hold of an old frame but it is 2000ks away and a bit hard to check before I bought it.

Norm, I can tell you the G rear hub is very narrow, much narrower than the full width hub.

Thanks Mark, good starting point, probably because they were not a Q/D hub so they can be at least 40mm narrower

I fitted a Electra X into a hard tail Model G. Took some adjustment on the middle down tube. I also put a 'old' Indian hub in the rear wheel. One problem was the need for a cross shaft for the rear brake. I also fitted web girder forks to make a WD RE/C outfit. Good luck.

Thanks Graham, at the moment the bike has girder forks but an Indian botched up hardtail, they have chopped off the rear swing arm and shocker mounts and welded into a hardtail. Obviously I don't need a cross over shaft because it has a 4 speed right shift. I don't have the G frame yet because I need to know what alterations I will need to do before I buy the frame and get it shipped because it is a couple of thousand ks away.Does the G frame have a horizontal tube running from the front downtube back to the backbone with mounts for the petrol tank. I only have photos of what I think is a G frame. My fear with this tube would prevent me from getting the rocker covers off. Out here we have very strict rules regarding and form of frame modification

Norm, I suspect there is some confusion, I think most of the replies assumed that you were discussing the earlier rigid frames with the two frame tubes that pass under the engine and attach at the front engine mount.
From your last reply it sounds like you are looking at what started as a late 50's bike with a rear end like the Bullet frame.
My personal view from your last post is that you would be better off passing on the current frame and looking for the earlier rigid frame, that's the frame I would like to use for a rigid trials project one day.

I have a 1946 model g rigid frame in the shed,I`ll measure it tomorrow in the daylight and post the measurement.

Norm, look at the illustrations in the Parts Books Online on this site. Pictures are good and reliable for your purposes.

Just measured the 46 model g frame and the measurment between the rear end where the rear axle locates is 7and5/16th of a inch or in new money 185mm.
